Bulla Regia

Located a few kilometers north of the city of Jendouba, north-west, the archaeological site of Bulla Regia is one of the main stages of cultural tourism in this region. The remains are evidence that it has more than 17 centuries of history of a town founded by the Numidians in the late sixth century BC at the latest and quickly became a royal residence. Independently at the beginning of the Roman period, it was erected in the municipality under Flavian and Roman colony under the Emperor Hadrian (117-138). At the end of the fifth century, its inhabitants were considered as poor Christians by Augustine.

Its archaeological remains spanning over 60 hectares, offer visitors the testimony of the protohistoric period (dolmen and hanout) and Numidian (urban planning, levels of habitat, ceramics and numismatics, epigraphy, ect.), And most importantly, the Roman period (forum, temples, markets, monuments show, public baths, monuments hydraulic cemeteries, etc.). and early Christian (churches). But what makes the celebrity of the site is its patrician houses adorned with beautiful mosaic pavements figured, and especially of underground floor, which is so far unprecedented in ancient domestic architecture.
