Museum Sidi Boulbaba - Gabes

The Museum offers visitors some aspects of traditional culture of South-East of Tunisia. The museum tries to fix the rites and traditional gestures and preserve the experiences of a reality constantly changing.
Four topics illustrate the richness of a heritage where the woman, the guardian of tradition, occupies a prominent place.

A meeting between the arts and crafts, weaving occupied all Tunisian women, went out of their fingers with magnificent carpets, rugs, drapes, gowns, shawls ... all in styles and varieties colors and designs that evoke the regional particularities. The museum offers us the possibility to follow the different stages of work: washing wool, carding, spinning, dyeing and weaving itself.

Musée des arts et traditions populauires
Special event in the cycle of life, marriage (second theme suggested by the museum) is marked by a ceremony rich and complex.

The third theme addressed by the museum's oasis agriculture. From the first century AD, the Roman historian Pliny the Elder tells us of the lush oasis of Gabes, its irrigation system and staging of its cultures where palm trees overhanging a stage of fruit trees (pomegranate, apricot, peach ...) and another vegetable crops, forage and cereal.

Outil de tissage
Extension of agriculture, traditional food is the fourth theme illustrated by the museum. Feeding practices allow the group to assert its cultural identity through the persistence of his culinary habits.
The museum is a place of Gabes which contain an element of collective memory, but he also wants an entertainment area open to all cultural activities.
